China's Belt and Road Investment in Africa Hits Record $33.5 Billion in H1 2026, Driven by Green Energy Surge

Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) investment in Africa reached an all-time high of $33.5 billion in the first half of 2026, surging 254 percent year-on-year and accounting for 67.24 percent of China's total global BRI investment flows during the period, according to a report jointly released by Fudan University's Green Finance & Development Center and the University of Queensland Business School in early August 2026.

Ethiopia emerged as the largest single recipient of Chinese BRI commitments globally in H1 2026, attracting more than $18.9 billion in announced investment. The surge was anchored by a green energy development agreement worth over $14 billion between the Ethiopian Investment Commission and China's Ming Yang Smart Energy Group. The first phase includes a $7.5 billion, 8.4-gigawatt renewable energy installation combining wind and solar power. A second phase commits an additional $7.3 billion for green ammonia production and the manufacturing of electric transmission and wind turbine equipment.

China's Xinfeng Steel is investing $10 billion to develop an industrial and steel manufacturing complex in the Ain Sokhna industrial zone, focusing on automotive steel and large-scale industrial products — among the largest single manufacturing investments under the BRI framework to date.

Energy-related BRI investment reached $36.3 billion in H1 2026 — nearly double the levels of most prior first-half periods. Green energy investment alone hit a record $14.3 billion, with an additional $5.3 billion in hydropower, together more than doubling from H1 2025.
